Art at Heart…and Heart is where Home is!

I love it when I am invited out to an event at a friend’s who has a piece or two of art. I would spend more time browsing the pieces and admiring them then actually mingling with guests. My friends pride themselves on what they owned and it made me feel that collecting art was a matter of prestige and only for the select few.

I wanted to know what the fuss was all about. So, I invested a lot of time researching, reading, visiting museums, making friends with authentic collectors, and talking to various artists to learn about the philosophies of the east and west.

Funny, the more educated I got on the subject, the more I realized that my friends who I envied for owning such lovely pieces really didn’t know what they had bought and could not even interpret art! What a shame!

I am proud to say that I made some expensive decisions and bought a good few pieces myself. And, yes, if you ever visited my tiny abode I could certainly educate you on why I bought them and even translate the artist’s point of view.

But, the glee didn’t last for too long, because the real pressure starts post-purchase! I brought the pieces home and got lost not knowing what furniture would go with what and what wall a certain piece should be hung on. I just didn’t know how to bring it all together. Argh!

One thing is clear. Each piece will have the greatest impact in your home if it’s placed with what compliments it!

I came across this beautiful article on Maria Brito, a lifestyle consultant in NYC. Maria specializes in art, and I do believe her and I share a similar vision on art. Her message is simple – integrate art in your personal space!

The way that contemporary art has positioned itself is ‘oh, everything is 5 million dollars,’ and only a handful of collectors can have things in their house. People have this misconception that contemporary art is all conceptual, a little hole in the floor surrounded by match sticks. I wanted to show that that’s not the case. I have friends who are so smart, who didn’t know that this world of amazing art and artists existed. They could buy these pieces without having to mortgage their houses.

Art is not just an acquired taste anymore, it reflects who you are. So, if you have it, flaunt it. But do take a moment to learn it’s message so that you don’t come across ignorant!
